Underneath It All: Our First Merino Wool Base Layers
A small new chapter, made for colder days, favorite linen pieces and everything worn underneath.
On September 30th, for the very first time in Son de Flor history, we are introducing something that you will probably not see very much of once you put it on. And that is exactly the idea.
A small batch of 100% Merino Wool Base Layers, made here in Lithuania together with a trusted Lithuanian manufacturer. Four simple pieces: a Long Sleeve Turtleneck Top, Long Sleeve Crew-Neck Top, Shorts and Boxers, available in sizes ranging from S to 3XL, and two very Son de Flor shades - Beige Brown and Black Pansy.
Nothing particularly loud, nor designed to become the centre of an outfit, just a really good layer underneath it all.

Why Merino? And Why Now?
September is such an interesting month in Lithuania. The mornings suddenly ask for a sweater, by lunchtime you might be carrying it over your arm. The sun is still warm, the shadows are getting longer, and somehow your wardrobe needs to understand several seasons within one day.
That’s why September felt like exactly the right moment.
We love linen and wear it throughout the year. But we also know that when temperatures begin to fall, linen sometimes needs a little friend underneath AND Merino Wool happens to be a rather wonderful one!
Unlike the heavy wool many of us remember from childhood, fine merino can be light, soft and close-fitting. Wool fibres naturally help manage temperature and moisture, which is why merino is so often used for clothing worn directly against the body. It keeps warmth close when it is cold, while remaining breathable as your body warms.
In other words, it does something we appreciate very much at Son de Flor: it quietly does its job.
Linen + Merino: An Unexpectedly Beautiful Friendship
Merino doesn't replace linen, yet it simply allows us to wear it differently.
Slip the Beige Brown Crew-Neck Top underneath a linen dress, and suddenly a favorite autumn dress can follow you further towards winter. Wear the Black Pansy Turtleneck underneath a Pinafore Dress, a vest, a Wrap Dress or a linen shirt left slightly open. Add tights, boots and a wool coat, and linen no longer feels like something that has to be packed away when summer ends.
The Shorts and Boxers are even more invisible little helpers. Wear them underneath linen dresses and linen skirts for an extra layer of warmth and comfort without changing the silhouette of what you are wearing.

And there is something rather satisfying about combining the two fibres - flax on the outside, while wool close to the skin - two ancient natural fibres that existed long before polyester, performance fabrics and the idea that we needed a different wardrobe for every possible temperature.
The Art of Layering
Living in Lithuania teaches you quite a lot about layering. And one of the biggest lessons is that more layers don't necessarily mean bulky layers. A good base layer should almost disappear.
Start with Merino closest to your body. Add your linen dress, shirt, trousers or skirt. Then knitwear if the weather asks for it, and finally a coat or jacket. The beauty is that you can remove the outer layers as the day changes while keeping that thin layer of warmth underneath.
For transitional weather, the Long Sleeve T-shirt may be enough. When winter arrives, the Turtleneck becomes a beautiful extra layer. And because the colors are intentionally quiet, a little neckline or sleeve showing doesn't need to feel like underwear at all.
Beige Brown disappears beautifully beneath lighter linen. Black Pansy works almost as another styling color - particularly with our darker autumn palette. Practical, but still beautiful. We wouldn't really know how to make it any other way!
Another Little Thing We Like About Merino
It doesn't ask to be washed after every wear. Wool naturally manages moisture and tends to retain less odour than many other fibres, so often the best thing you can do after wearing a merino layer is simply hang it up and let it air. Our manufacturer recommends airing merino rather than washing it unnecessarily. Less washing means less work for you, but it can also mean less stress on the garment.
And when it does need washing: gently, cool, and according to the care instructions. Wool is wonderful, but it appreciates kindness. Which, come to think of it, is not so different from linen!
Made in Lithuania, Once Again
There is another reason this little project feels important to us. Over nine years of Son de Flor, our global community has allowed us to send a small piece of Lithuania into wardrobes all around the world.
At first, it was linen. Then came other pieces of the world we know here - our craftsmanship, sewing, home linens, traditions, and the gentle knowledge of people who have been working with textiles for decades.
For this project, we chose to work with "Utenos Trikotažas", an established Lithuanian knitwear manufacturer with a long history in textile production and internationally recognised quality and environmental management standards. Their publicly documented standards include OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 as well as ISO 9001 and ISO 14001.
We don't need to tell every technical detail of that story. What matters to us is a bit simpler: we wanted to make this with people who know what they are doing. Because Lithuania may be a very small country, but when it comes to textiles, small doesn't necessarily mean inexperienced. Quite the opposite! For us, Made in Lithuania has slowly become our own little measure of quality.
We have tested that belief with linen. We test it every day with our production. We brought it into Son de Flor Home. And now we are placing a little bet on Lithuanian-made Merino Wool too.
Four Pieces. Two Colors. One Small Batch.
We intentionally kept the first edition small. Not because we don't believe in it, but because this is how we like introducing something genuinely new to Son de Flor. We make some, we wear it ourselves, then you wear it, we listen and then we see where the story wants to go.
For now, there are just four essentials - Turtleneck Long Sleeve Top, Long Sleeve Crew-Neck Top, Shorts and Boxers. No enormous collection and no need to reinvent your wardrobe.

If one thin Merino Wool layer allows your favorite linen dress to stay out of the wardrobe for another two or three months, that feels very Son de Flor to us.
Summer Dresses Don't Have to Know It's Winter
Maybe this is our favorite thought behind the whole little project. For years we have been asked whether linen can really be worn all year round. Our answer has always been yes - although living in Lithuania means we say that with a certain amount of realism.
A linen dress alone on a January morning? Perhaps not. A linen dress over fine Merino, with tights, knitwear and a proper coat? Absolutely!
And that is exactly what thoughtful dressing increasingly means to us - not endlessly adding more clothes, but finding small, intelligent ways to make the clothes we already love work harder, travel further through the seasons and stay part of our everyday lives.
100% Merino Wool. Made in Lithuania. Made to layer beautifully underneath the things you already love.
And hopefully, to keep you warm while doing so!! 🤍
