The Art of Mending: A Lifetime Commitment to Sustainability

Mending your clothes might seem intimidating, but here is the reality - there are many ways to do it and everyone can do it! With fast fashion being within arms reach, mending seems unnecessary and a thing of the past; something our grandmothers used to do, patching up the elbows of our sweaters for another year of wear. This year, we hope we can bring back the lost art of mending.

This January, we are proud to launch our Lifetime Commitment initiative, offering mending materials to our customers for the price of shipping. With this project, we hope to inspire a renewed appreciation for the value of caring for our garments, the stories they carry, and the uniqueness of linen.

Our lifetime commitment to you

At Son de Flor, we’ve always focused on creating garments that last and our Lifetime Commitment initiative is a natural step forward. Starting January 2025, we’ll be offering essential mending materials like recycled plastic or linen-covered buttons, zippers, matching linen patches and thread to help you keep your Son de Flor garments going strong.

By making it easier to repair and refresh your clothing, we’re not only encouraging sustainability but also celebrating the charm of a well-loved piece.

Back in the day, mending was inevitable

Mending used to be a part of life. People saw their clothes as valuable, so taking care of them wasn’t just smart – it was a way to honour the time and skill that went into making them. In tough times, like during the Great Depression or wartime, fixing clothes wasn’t just helpful but a necessity. Families sewed up tears, patched holes and replaced missing buttons to make their wardrobes last longer.

But mending wasn’t only about practicality. Repaired clothes carried stories, becoming one-of-a-kind pieces, shaped by the lives of those who wore and cared for them.

Now, we collectively generate tons and tons of textile waste

These days, fast fashion pushes us to keep buying, tossing, and replacing clothes faster than ever. Re-ordering the same shirt for a dollar or two seems to be more convenient than patching up a tiny hole. Every year, about 92 million tons of textile waste are created worldwide, with most of it either burned or dumped in landfills. On top of that, making new clothes often comes with a heavy cost – both to the environment and to the people making them. Fast fashion often comes with child labour, unfair wages, horrible working conditions and even toxic materials.

But things are starting to change. More and more people are realising that this throwaway culture isn’t sustainable and are looking for better options. Mending is making a comeback! Not just as a way to fix things, but as a thoughtful choice to slow down, value what we own, and create less waste.

Join the movement!

At Son de Flor, we believe the future of fashion lies in choosing what truly matters: quality, sustainability, and care. Mending plays a big role in this. When we take care of the clothes we wear, we create a deeper connection to fashion – one that respects the skilled hands behind each piece and the world we live in.
